Take it Back

Take it Back

Last night I watched a movie about Pope Pius and the Nazi’s capture of Rome. It was tough to watch, but interesting. I learned some things about the rock and hard place the Pope was in. At times, the movie was corny but mostly it dwelled on the subject of dominance and how quickly it gives way to brutality. I have seen scores of movies and documentaries on the holocaust, each one leaving a lasting impression. So I steeled myself through the entire movie and managed to remain dry-eyed. Until the end.

I lost it over a 3 second clip. Picture a joyous crowd welcoming a caravan of heroic soldiers—each one greeted as a liberator, each one as a rescuer. And then there was the last one. He carried the American flag.

I’m not embarrassed to say that I sobbed out loud. That huge moment of pride that has lasted 80 years has now ended. That clip will never be true in the future. At least not in my lifetime. So in just four weeks, our country went from defending democracy and rescuing the oppressed to selling out Ukraine, NATO, and all of Europe. Pretty stunning way to treat the same countries who came to our defense after 9/11.

All of this has made me realize that I have allowed a party that embraces a traitor to own the American flag. WTF?

No more! I’m taking it back. I’m gonna put up a flag pole and fly the American flag. I might even add a rainbow flag. Hell, I might even slap a flag on my car and put it right next to the equal sign that is already there.

I invite you to join me. Let’s take back our flag.
